The development of weapons in Ancient Greece has evolved alongside changing fighting tactics and formations. These weapons have adapted in order to be most effective in the current fighting structure. Greek social structure highly influenced whether the value is placed on the individual in a fighting force or the fighting force as a whole. Individual and group combat have different fighting tactics that result in different weapons and uses. Offensive weapons are most effective in individual combat but defensive measures are favored in fighting with a group. Shields, armor, spears, and swords have developed throughout Ancient Greek history depending on changing military tactics.
